This product contains methylcobalamin, the bioactive form of vitamin B12, in a high concentration of 5 mg (5,000 mcg) per tablet. Methylcobalamin is one of 2 active coenzyme forms of vitamin B12 (the other is adenosylcobalamin) and serves an important role in red blood cell formation, methylation reactions, brain and nervous system function, and immune system regulation.†
Vitamin B12 is provided at significantly higher potency than the recommended daily allowance (RDA) to bypass usual mechanisms of absorption that rely on Intrinsic Factor. Consuming high amounts of vitamin B12 allow it to be absorbed more readily. This lozenge formula dissolves in the mouth within a few minutes or may also be swallowed whole if desired.
• Extra potent vitamin B12: This vitamin is crucial to formation of healthy red blood cells, energy metabolism, nervous system support, cognitive function, and homocysteine regulation.† Absorption of vitamin B12 is facilitated by Intrinsic Factor, a natural protein produced by the parietal cells of the stomach lining. However, the amount of B12 that can be absorbed by this mechanism is limited. It may also be absorbed by an alternate mechanism (passive diffusion) without reliance on Intrinsic Factor if high amounts of 1 mg (1,000 mcg) or more are taken. Thus, individuals without adequate Intrinsic Factor can still obtain adequate amounts of B12 if extra amounts are ingested.
• Active, coenzyme form: Blood levels of vitamin B12 are not always a reflection of tissue levels and a deficiency of the coenzyme forms might exist in tissues or other body fluids even if an adequate amount of cobalamin is present in circulation. Methylcobalamin is a body-ready form with metabolic benefits that may not be provided by other forms of vitamin B12. Although cyanocobalamin is the most commonly used form of vitamin B12 in dietary supplements, it must be converted by enzymes into an active coenzyme form to be useful.
Methylcobalamin can be used whenever a need for supplemental vitamin B12 exists. It may be particularly useful for individuals with decreased methylation capacity, increased homocysteine, or neurological issues.† Of all the forms of vitamin B12, methylcobalamin appears best at supporting the unique metabolic biochemistry of children on the spectrum, who often have methylation and neurological issues.†
Methylcobalamin contains mannitol and xylitol as sweetening agents, and natural cherry flavor. Methylcobalamin is free of the following common allergens: milk/casein, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, gluten, and soybeans. Contains no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.
